This 'novel
study' (in-depth study of a novel) has been developed for classroom use with group activities alternating individual tasks.
- Groups can be organized to facilitate single computer
classrooms as needed.
- As there are "prediction" questions
in the lessons, students are requested to NOT read the book any faster than they can
do the lessons.
- Many lessons have an option for teachers to read selected chapters. Teachers reading
to small groups will help those students who are slow readers and who might
become frustrated with the size of the book.
- There will be chapters for
students to read to students -- it might be advantageous to set up groups
of 3 or 5 students each for these purposes and for possible group research
activities (if teachers so desire).
- For those readers who do not
feel that they need this assistance and can read the book themselves, the
lessons are laid out so that the students can complete them as they read
the book. But remember, it sure is nice to be read to, once
in a while!
- The novel study integrates the content of the book with: the Internet, computer
programs within this web site:
dictionaries and other information
retrieval systems. Most important of all, it involves the student,
with the content of this book.
- The intent is to provide safe and
informative web links where students can find extra information to enhance
the book. Most web sites are at a grade 8 reading level, which might result
in the students needing assistance with comprehension at these points.
| Regarding
links to sites on the Internet, please keep in mind that these pages, like
all web pages, change from time to time, and I recommend that you visit
each site first, before the children do, to view the content and make sure
that it meets with your expectations. I will have extra
links in the teacher's resources section. |
- Each lesson
has a linked student worksheet. These pages should be printed off and
placed in a binder or duotang. There will be a number of drawings
and other activities that the students will be required to do, these should
be placed directly behind the corresponding lesson's worksheet. The
worksheets can also act as organisers for their work.
- Teachers
will find corresponding teacher answer keys for every worksheet by following
the Teacher Information links at the top
of every lesson page. Also, background information on the Unit and access extra web links
in case of broken links in lessons are available too.Teachers will have to have a password to access
this area. Contact
me to a receive one.
- For
students who are looking for a bit more of a challenge --there are enrichment
activities in some of the lessons. These activities are designed
to take the "keen" student one step beyond the regular lesson. Be
prepared for some fun!

I will
be putting in this location interesting titbits that add to the lesson.
Don't
know what an animal is that is mentioned in the book? Look here and there
might be a link to a picture of it!
